Styles & experties.

Over the years I have trained in many different dance styles. I’ve perfected a number of these throughout my journey and have earned teaching and performing opportunities from this.

BREAKIN’ & HIP HOP

Flowzaic_2_002[1].JPG

I started my journey with hiphop & ‘breakdancing’ as we called it then back in the early 80’s when the phenomenon hit the UK. I knew this was a dance style that I wanted to pursue and master.
I trained hard and used my gymnastic skills and upper body strength that I already had to help me develop my skills within this style. I was lucky enough to be mentored by old school original Bboy of London Town - Dolby D who founded the ‘London All Stars.’ in the 80’s

One of UK's foremost B-girl's and founder of 'FLOWZAIC' UK's first all all female Breaking crew, Sunanda aka ‘BGIRL SUNSUN’ has performed, battled , judged and hosted at some of the biggest Hip Hop and B-boy events all over the world such as : Uk bboy champs - London , BOTY - Germany , Bsupreme- London , Webgirlz-( Lincon Centre New York), Freestyle session (LA), Floor wars (Denmark), Urban Games - London. Breakmission (Birmingham), R16 - Korea. Octagon Battle- Alieness - European tour, Nike Dance Clash to BOTY and B-Supreme women in Hip-Hop festival at the South Bank Centre.

I have been lucky enough to have met, trained with and learn’t from many of the best Bboys and Bgirls from around the world such as :
Rockafella, Aisa 1 , Ken Swift, Alieness, Poe One, Crazy Legs, Flomaster , Bboy Mouse, Illadelph Flave, DJ Renegade, Bboy LiL’Tim

LOCKING & POPPING (FUNK STYLEs)

These 2 styles born in the west coast of America were made famous as far back as the late 60’s / early 70’s. In London we only saw snippets of these dance styles growing up and the Uk had their own interpretation so it wasn’t until around 2003 I started to learn this style properly.

I learn’t some of the original form from Illadelph Flave who had trained with ‘Rene Harris pure movement ‘ - both based in Philadelphia. A few years later I learnt from Fred Folkes- ( Realness ) who had knowledge of both these dance styles started his own classes in London. We were Lucky enough to be mentored & taught by Greg ‘Campbellock’ Junior, Suga pop , Popin Pete ,

Mr Wiggles, Tony GoGo

and also got to meet ‘boogaloo’ Sam Solomon , Skeeter Rabbit, Aldopho ‘Shaba doo Quinones, Bill ‘Slim the robot’ Williams,

Fred ‘Mr.Penguin’ Berry aka ‘ReRun’ ,Toni Basil

Don ‘Campbellock’ Campbell, and many more practitioners.

LINDY HOP & VERNACULAR AMERICAN JAZZ

In 1993, I met Temujin Gill who Inspired me to learn a range of dances within the traditional jazz dance form such as Charleston, LindyHop, Rhythm Tap, Big Apple & Blues.

Over the years myself & Temujin formed a fantastic Lindy hop partnership and went on to perform all around the UK; traveling internationally, teaching in countries such as Switzerland, U.S.A (New York ) and at the world-famous dance camp ‘Herrang’ in Sweden.

I have learnt from and danced with one of the great LindyHop pioneers.

Frankie Manning who choreographed Lindy Hop section in ‘Hellzapoppin” and is one of the founding members of ‘whiteys Lindy Hoppers’.

I have also worked alongside - Chas Young , Chester Whitmore & Dawn Hampton.

In 1998 we were finalists in the UK lindy hop championships & appeared at events such the ‘Lindy Hop festival’ 1997 at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre.

This duet was devised by Temujin Gill and Sunanda Biswas and premièred at the launch of Greenwich Dance's 2010 Big Dance programme. It is a play between two ...

Since then we have toured with ‘Herb Miller band’, performed in the Westend’s version of the ‘Cotton Club’ - Embassy rooms, and gigged at the iconic club ‘Ronnie Scotts’ in.

In 2010 Temujin & I choreographed a piece that combined HipHop & Jazz styles together creating ‘Lindy Break’ that features an original style that is unique to our work. I continue to teach, perform and socially jam these styles and use the roots and the history of jazz to enhance my other styles as through my years of expertise I feel there is a great & powerful connection within these dance forms.

 ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS

My journey in this sport started in Infant school, I joined the gym club in my juniors and participated in school competitions. My mum took me to a club which I attended with one friend. After she left to take up swimming, my mum decided to take me to a more local gym club in Lewisham called ‘Ladywell Gymnastics Club’ - I worked incredibly hard to become part of the team and over the next 7 years of my life, I trained intensely and competed in many competitions including international in Leverkusen, Germany. I also won an individual championship in Enfield, North London. I also competed in the ’London Youth Games’ in Crystal Palace 5 years in a row and on my last year in 1989 I came 5th overall. This was my social life over many years - from this, I gained masses of physical knowledge, discipline, and grounding which set me up for my career in dance. I also took coaching courses and continued to coach gymnastics at different clubs including Hendon Youth Sports Centre & Jubilee Hall.

VOCAL & MUSIC

301048_2395801141814_1163846955_n.jpg

From a young age, I learned to play the piano and started to write my own songs as a teenager. Always enjoying singing, I participated in singing classes at College and also learned from friends, colleagues, and established singing teachers. Growing up I started listening to music as my dad would play the radio all the time and so the music from ’70s & ’80s would play through the house, over the years, I aspired to be a rapper such as Monie Love, Queen Latifah & Roxanne Chante and was inspired by singers and bands like Madonna, Blondie, Whitney Houston and Chaka khan. This inspired me to perform on stage and record a rap song in Barcelona Spain during my last year at College. In 1995, I was booked by TAKE THAT to be part of their ‘Nobody Else Tour ‘ as a featured Rapper and Dancer; and was due to perform alongside Robbie Williams in one of their songs. Unfortunately, Robbie left during that tour however, I gained the fantastic opportunity to rewrite the lyrics and perform each night alongside the rest of the band. In 1999 I performed jazz songs in the Westend version of the ‘Cotton Club ‘ at Embassy rooms and then spent the next few years writing songs with various artists. In 2003, I was asked to do a gig for BONY M in Austria where I was a backing singer for the front lady Liz Mitchell. I then started Hosting hip hop hop jams on the mic & have MC’d many battles over the last 15 years such as BSUPREME , ‘It’s our theatre’ Slam nights, Unleash da groove, Nike Empowerment days. UEL (collide ) Ground Zero (online ) and many more. In 2020, Grounded Movement went on a doorstep tour of ‘Ragtime 2 Grime ‘ our most recent production where my main role is the vocal artist/ rapper and was lucky enough to have TY music and Temujin Gill write for me. I continue to write songs and lyrics for shows and my own projects and will hopefully get to record more of them in the near future.
